Leffe represents the abbey category at scale; Chimay represents genuine Trappist production, brewed within Scourmont Abbey under the Authentic Trappist Product designation. The difference matters to informed buyers and supports a materially higher shelf price.

Two constraints define this category commercially. Trappist output is capped by the abbey’s own capacity, so allocation rather than price is usually what limits a shipment — volumes are confirmed case by case and cannot be assumed from a previous order. And at 6.5–9% ABV these beers attract significantly higher excise duty than lager in most destinations, and in some markets fall into a different licensing band entirely. Build both facts into your landed-cost model before committing to volume.
