Sourcing beer from Ireland
Two Guinness specifications circulate in international trade and they are not interchangeable. Guinness Draught at around 4.2% ABV uses a nitrogen widget in can and bottle to reproduce the draught pour, and sells into European and Western markets. Guinness Foreign Extra Stout at around 7.5% ABV was formulated to survive long shipping routes and remains the version demanded in West Africa, the Caribbean and parts of South-East Asia.
Buyers regularly submit an inquiry for "Guinness" without stating which. Availability, production origin and landed cost differ substantially between the two, and Foreign Extra Stout is produced in several countries under licence.
